Solving a Familiar Post-Production Challenge
Chameleon started with a problem that will be familiar to almost anyone working in audio post-production: recordings made at different times and in different places rarely share the same acoustic character. ADR may be perfectly recorded but still sound disconnected from production dialogue. Foley needs to feel like it actually belongs in the space on screen, and dialogue recorded across different locations can carry completely different room acoustics.
Traditionally, recreating those acoustics means carefully listening to the original recording, choosing suitable reverbs and manually adjusting parameters until everything starts to fit together. With Chameleon, we wanted to find a way to automate much of that work while still leaving the important decisions to the mixer.
Chameleon analyzes the reverb contained in a reference recording and creates a matching reverb profile that can then be applied to another signal. Instead of trying to recreate the room by hand, the acoustic characteristics can be learned directly from the original recording and then adjusted as needed.
Seeing Chameleon being used in professional post-production workflows around the world has already been incredibly rewarding. Receiving an Emmy for it is a huge honour.
Our Second Emmy
This award is also a very special milestone for Accentize. In 2024, dxRevive Pro received an Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Award for its contribution to dialogue restoration. Now Chameleon has received the same recognition for its approach to reverb matching and dialogue mixing.
When I started Accentize, it was essentially a hobby project. I was fascinated by audio processing and by the possibilities of using new technology to solve problems that had traditionally required a lot of manual work. Accentize is still a very small company today, so seeing our name and our products recognised alongside technologies from much larger companies in our industry feels a little surreal.
I never expected to win one Emmy when I started working on these products. Winning a second one is something I am incredibly grateful for, and it gives us a lot of motivation to keep experimenting, researching and building new tools for the people working in film and television sound.
